Hi Everyone
Yesterday was my boyfriends birthday and we celebrated it at the Rugby watching the Help for Hero's game. Help for Hero's is such a great and important charity founded by Bryn and Emma Parry in October 2007 out of a desire to help the wounded Servicemen and women returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. The message of the charity is simple: They are strictly non political and non critical; they simply want to help. They believe that anyone who volunteers to serve in time of war, knowing that they may risk all, is a hero. These are ordinary people doing extraordinary things and some of them are living with the consequences of their service for life and believe we may not be able to prevent our soldiers from being wounded, but together we can help them get better.
Now to the birthday cake :-) I decided to go with a golf theme which is another of my boyfriends hobbies. It took me ages to decide what theme to go with but golf won in the end.
Here is it:

After finishing the cake I realised that to most it may look like it is my boyfriends 18th birthday.. well it wasn't that was supposed to be the 18th hole :-) the cake is a 7" 3 layer cake base with a 4" 2 layer top. I tried to use a thinner layer of sugarpaste so that I coud get a cleaner edge on the cake and also I went with a chocolate based icing underneath which dries a bit harder in the fridge than vanilla buttercream. The key to the sharper edge is to get the buttercream layer perfect and the the sugarpaste will go on well.
I found a really good tutorial for getting sharp edges on your cakes written on CakesDecor's website by Torta - Couture Cakes. I haven't managed to get the edges anywhere near as sharp as Torta Couture but because I used a chocolate buttercream as oppose to chocolate ganache it was a bit more difficult. If you read the tutorial I have linked to Torta Couture explains why. Happy with my attempt though :-)
For the writing I used FMM Tappits which you can buy in most cake craft shops. Here is a link to where I bought them.. Cakes, cookies and crafts shop
If you ever have any questions on any of the cakes that I have created and the equipment I use, please do get in touch or leave a comment as I am always happy to share my ideas.
Happy Baking everyone
Strawberry lane cake company: hello Monnie and welcome to my blog. The funky lettering is very good also, I have see it used on a few cakes.
